Crypto's biggest PAC puts $30 million behind unseating Sherrod Brown

Days after Senate Democrats sank the Clarity Act, the crypto industry's Fairshake PAC committed $30 million to Ohio's Senate race — its largest single spending decision yet.

Fairshake, the crypto industry's dominant political action committee, announced a $30 million spending commitment in Ohio's Senate race ahead of November's midterms — by its own account, its most aggressive single move since it began operating. The announcement landed just days after the Clarity Act failed a Senate procedural vote, with Democrats citing concerns that the bill would let President Trump personally profit from his crypto holdings.

Why Sherrod Brown specifically

The spending targets Sherrod Brown, the former Ohio senator and past chair of the Senate Banking Committee, who used that position to push measures cracking down on crypto's use in terrorism financing and sanctions evasion. Fairshake isn't a stranger to this race: it spent $12 million in 2024 backing Republican Bernie Moreno against Brown, and is now backing Jon Husted, a Republican who has championed pro-crypto legislation.

The PAC isn't purely partisan

Fairshake has also spent on behalf of Senate Democrats it sees as crypto-friendly, including Ruben Gallego and Elissa Slotkin — both of whom, notably, voted against the Clarity Act despite the PAC's past support. A spokesperson said further spending decisions are expected in the coming weeks, suggesting Ohio is an opening move rather than the full extent of the PAC's midterm strategy.
